Man Up has such a cute sentiment but we're sorry lovies: trans folk, non-binary peeps and all other types of queer people have always existed, and are here to stay xx

Dearest Destiny dad: pivot that panic attack you call a "parenting strategy" and talk about trans folks, who’ve been here since literally before your favourite Bible verses were drafted on papyrus!

Just imagine... your kid might be queer! Sorry to break it to you but the latest census says 1 in 20 people in Aotearoa are. Imagine that even though, as a good dad, you love them and want to bring them up right, but your panicked denial of queerness destroys their self-esteem, and causes them unspeakable misery and a deep resentment towards you! Imagine if the values your church has taught you cause you to be a bad parent?

Imagine denying queer existence, and not letting queer "kids be kids"?

Hey, Man Up member: one of your favourite things to talk about is statistics around LGBTQI+ suicides... wouldn't it be interesting to see the stats on how many frightened fathers, mothers, churches, and organizations like yours caused or contributed to them, by denying children their queer existence?

Is there a chance that your views and values are causing suffering?

Are you the kind of person who thinks trans people are a "new trend", when indigenous cultures have been doing it for centuries? Ever heard about the Fa'afafine from Samoa and the wider Pacific Islands? Or the Hijra of South Asia (just to name two of many others cultures from whom being non-binary or trans were simply accepted)? Sorry mister wanna be role model: queerness isn’t a "phase," it’s a heritage!

Think you’re gonna “pray the gay away”? Queer folks have been sashaying through history longer than your bloodline’s had teeth— Māori have a long history of Takatāpui here in NZ; Achilles loved Patroclus, and Shakespeare wrote sonnets gayer than a RuPaul lip-sync! And let's not forget queerness exists outside of the human race: don't forget about that gay ram down at the block, or the fact that same-sex courtship, companionship, and the other stuff they do has been observed in animals since classical antiquity - which points to the fact that the only thing “new” here is your denial, my love.

Keep this up, and your future’s gonna be sad: estranged kids, grandchildren who’ll know you only as “that guy Nana blocked on Facebook,” and a tombstone that’ll read, “Here lies Mr. ‘Traditional Values’—outlived by your queer kid, your queer kid's loving queer partner, and all of the sane, regular folk who cringe deeply that you were affiliated with that awful organization ”.
